“Blessed are the Meek”

‘WHAT INSPIRED BLESSED?’

The proverb, ‘Lord disturb my comfort, that I might comfort the disturbed’.

A Haitian proverb that was read to me by a New Orleans 9th Ward resident in 2009…….It was a quote that resonated deep within me, which spoke to our respective capabilities to help our fellow neighbors and improve our  communities. As Director/Producer, I was in the process of completing a  documentary film entitled,  “Heart of the City: Katrina Five Years Later” in 2009-2010. I began work on the ‘Blessed’ project, fully cognizant of the at once tragic and inspiring connections between Haiti and New Orleans. Today, much like the survivors of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, the surviving witnesses to Haiti’s earthquake continue an uncertain journey of recovery.  Now, three years later, disillusionment and donor fatigue have settled in. At a time when threatening conditions, lingering debris, and a cholera outbreak hamper even the smallest of strides. “Blessed are the Meek” seeks to continue a personal commitment of telling stories within the Diaspora; inspiring narratives of ordinary individuals, creating extraordinary change.

‘WHAT DO WE NEED?’
We are kindly requesting donations that will allow Jaffa Films, the opportunity to travel back to Haiti to complete this project.  We are in the pre-production phase of “Blessed are the Meek.” However, comes the necessity to raise funds and we need your support to continue this feature length documentary. We plan to film an additional four week production schedule in 2013 in Haiti; then conduct follow-up filming in 2014.

‘WHERE WILL THE FUNDS GO?’
Funding will allow for round trip travel, room & board  for a small film crew to Haiti. Funding will be used for  on-location scouting and additional field interviews in Haiti, Miami,  and New York, where concentrated acts of the documentary are centered. Many of the expenses are related to in-country transportation and production expenses. Additional transcribing, translation of over 80 hours of footage along with script development and  the creation of a rough cut of the film are also needed by the spring of 2014.

‘WHAT ARE THE PLANS FOR THE FILM?’
As soon as we finish the edit in late 2014,  we’re planning to submit the film to major national/international festivals, where we hope to premiere in a competition category. We will work towards a theatrical distribution and a PBS broadcast; then VOD/DVD to follow.

The Fiscal Sponsor:

City Lore is an organization dedicated to the preservation of New York City’s, and America’s living cultural heritage. City Lore is a non-profit organization founded in 1986 to produce programs and publications that convey the richness of New York City’s cultural heritage. A multicultural, multiracial, non-profit media arts organization which facilitates the production, promotion, distribution and exhibition of independent films and media.

What is Fiscal Sponsorship ?

As the fiscal sponsor , City Lore accepts donations, services or grants on behalf of the filmmaker and takes the responsibility of administering the funds received in support of the development and completion of the film.

Fiscal sponsorship allows a project to accept funds that require non profit tax-exempt status. Non-profit status is required by many foundations, corporations and government agencies in order to be eligible for funding since many do not accept applications from individuals. Additionally, the partnership between artist and City Lore allows the filmmaker to receive tax-exempt contributions from individuals, a major incentive for individuals who are considering making a donation to a project.
